On 12th March, 2025, our conversation was led by Chris. The initial stimuli included the Greek myth of Pandora’s box, pictures of spring and poems about snowdrops and hope. Those attending were encouraged to think about their favourite seasons, how they prepare for spring and their response to the conversation title.
Discussion included some appreciation of every season and the different experiences they offer, also the idea of things being “for a season”. Mention was made of the book “Wintering” by Katherine Jamie which several of us had read. It was observed that seasons trigger memories – an example was given of winter’s associations with childhood. Spring, it was noted, brought the positivity of new life.
We discussed the present sense of hopelessness we experienced, given the news, but also the greyness of the last winter and – more generally – the effect of weather on mood, including its use as a device in literature to match the emotions of characters. As we reflected on mental health challenges – sometimes clinical and sometimes a temporary response to circumstances that eventually changed for the better – the value of supportive relationships was identified.
Music was discussed as a way of accessing hope, albeit progressively, and one participant talked about the joyfulness of lambs and the wonderful softness of the wool obtained from their fleeces and used in knitting. Kindness was also mentioned as something hopeful – the act itself and the underlying intention.
We were grateful to Chris for preparing the session and to all who engaged with it for their contributions.
